Freedom Fountain is a constant symbol of the ultimate sacrifice
soldiers make...Discovered after nearly sixty years of neglect
and with the pond portion buried under nearly a foot of dirt,
the original fountain was constructed during World War II by
Italian POW's who were held at Camp Roberts. The crew added two
rifles, a "crying" helmet and a kneeling, praying soldier
to it in memory of all California Army National Guard soldiers
who have fallen in the line of duty in the Global War of Terrorism.
As of March 26, 2005, SPC Daniel Unger's name appears along with
nine other heroes on this fountain.
